Business and Peace, Mindanao

The Business and Peace Initiative was launched in September 2001 to co-ordinate a collective business contribution to conflict resolution and development in the war-torn areas of Muslim Mindanao.

The programme is managed by Philippine Business for Social Progress, with on-going advice and input from IBLF, and funding from the UK government.

The focus has been to improve the capacity of Mindanao business leaders, to give young Muslim professionals the chance to work as interns in leading companies in the capital, Manila, to build new business linkages between Mindanao and national and international companies and to address some of the barriers to trade.

The programme was originally a three-year initiative but at the end of 2005 funding was approved to extend it for a further three years (see picture on the right, taken at the reception held in Manila to launch the second phase).

The second phase is now fully under way, with its goal of broaden the private sector's contribution in achieving long-term peace and development in Mindanao. Progress towards this goal is continuing despite some difficulties in the peace process.
