INDONESIA
The primary focus of Indonesia Business Links, our local partner, is to promote business ethics across the business community.

IBLF set up the Indonesia Business Links (IBL) in 1998 as a way to improve economic and business development for small and medium-sized organisations.

Promoting youth entrepreneurship

IBLF's Youth Business International programme has set up the Young Entrepreneurs Start-Up (YES) programme to help mentor and finance young entrepreneurs. The programme is operated by Indonesia Business Links and is part of YBI's network which spans 40 countries.

The business response to Avian flu

In 2006 IBLF published a paper with Indonesia Business Links, outlining the business case for involvement in a potential Avian flu pandemic and setting out a framework for that involvement.

Avian Flu is a highly contagious animal virus (H5N1) that can infect all bird species, but domesticated poultry are particularly vulnerable. According to the World Bank and the WHO, there have been almost 150 deaths in over 240 cases of human infection in 10 countries, mainly amongst people who had direct or indirect contact with sick poultry. The impact has been severe - an estimated 220 million bird deaths and significant damage to rural livelihoods, especially in the poorest areas by mid 2006.

Following a business roundtable on Avian Flu in Jakarta, Indonesia on 8 September 2006, IBLF and IBLF developed a brief and 10 point action plan to enable companies to understand the risks they face and prepare for a possible outbreak.

Small business development

IBL promotes the development of small businesses - for example through the Warbisnet programme, which helps small businesses gain access to the internet.

Post-tsunami response

Following the Asian tsunami of 2004, IBLF developed an initiative to advise businesses on how they can assist in disaster response and long-term recovery. Our work culminated in a report in March 2006 entitled Best Intentions, Complex Realities - Lessons from the tsunami: how business can use its goodwill and resources to provide effective assistance to disaster relief and recovery efforts.
