ASIA PACIFIC
IBLF has been active in Asia since 1990, developing successful cross-sector partnerships and demonstrating the business case for involvement in development challenges.

Since the economic crisis in 1997, countries in the region have increasingly recognised the importance of strengthening the regulatory framework and improving the social climate in order to sustain growth and maintain social stability in the long term.

Despite generally robust business activities, the region continues to face significant social challenges associated with rapid economic development including concerns over corporate governance, labour standards, health and safety, environmental degradation and political stability.

A key focus of IBLF in the region has been developing sustainable business practices across all major business sectors, promoting good governance and tackling corruption.

In addition, three of IBLF's most successful partnership programmes are located in South East Asia – the Business and Peace project in Mindanao, the Vietnam Business Links Initiative and the Youth Career Initiative in Thailand.

Current activities

China - improving business standards, promoting youth entrepreneurship and combating obesity

India - demonstrating how business can have a positive impact on development through making core business models more sustainable

Indonesia - working with Indonesia Business Links to promote business ethics and help small businesses access information and mentoring

The Philippines - enhancing the role of the private sector in achieving long-term peace and development in Mindanao, a post-conflict region

Thailand - providing at-risk young people with life skills courtesy of the hotel industry, engaging business in post-tsunami recovery initiatives and exploring opportunities to improve business standards

Vietnam – a programme to improve working conditions in Vietnamese footwear and garment industries, and to promote corporate responsibility throughout Vietnam

IBLF has built up close and effective partnerships with local organisations in China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Through these, IBLF is able to identify key local challenges for business problems and bring together groups of foreign and local companies, government authorities and NGOs to find solutions.

Disaster response

Following the Asian tsunami of 2004, IBLF developed an initiative to advise businesses on how they can assist in disaster response and long-term recovery. Our work culminated in a report in March 2006 entitled Best Intentions, Complex Realities - Lessons from the tsunami: how business can use its goodwill and resources to provide effective assistance to disaster relief and recovery efforts.
