Youth Career Initiative: Spotlight on Latin America and the Caribbean

IBLF's YCI programme empowers disadvantaged youth to gain access to vocational training opportunities, via employment training programmes with the hotel industry. Latin America and the Caribbean has long been a region of both opportunity as well as struggle. Despite having a rich cultural heritage, and a variety of environmental resources, socio-economic issues in the area are prevalent. This document profiles YCI programmes in Costa Rica, Mexico and Brazil; and the youth employment scenario in Argentina, Dominican Republic and Peru.

A partnership launched by Standard Chartered seven years ago is the subject of a case study by IBLF’s The Partnering Initiative. The profiling of the bank's Seeing is Believing initiative offers an opportunity for other corporate or NGO sector partners to learn about the challenges and the solutions arrived at that have made this partnership successful. TPI has aimed for the publication to be a learning case study, with a focus on the Bank’s collaboration with the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

Seeing is Believing has raised a total of $17m, impacted the lives of 8 million individuals and is targeting to raise a further $20m to develop comprehensive eye care for 20 million people in underprivileged urban areas. By the end of 2012, it will have raised $40m for eye care in the developing world.
