ENGAGE - Europe Project
ENGAGE is delivered by a network of expert national partner organisations that facilitate quality employee engagement opportunities at a national and local level across the world. This group includes members of the CSR Europe, CSR Asia and Forum Empresa networks, as well as other community partnership specialists (see ENGAGE Network for more details).

At the European level, ENGAGE aims to:

  •  Raise the profile of employee engagement
  •  Establish favourable conditions for community development partnerships
  • Use the knowledge, experience and resources of its network of corporate practitioners and international partners to assist companies in delivering European community strategies
  • Provide advice, training and ongoing coaching

Collaborative action

ENGAGE has developed a successful model of collaborative action through its cities programme, piloted in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Madrid, and it is now being rolled out to further European cities. The model brings companies together to work collaboratively, driving community impact through the focused application of employees’ skills and time.

This collaborative action model is relatively new in continental Europe, and the ENGAGE experience with the cities approach has provided the following guidelines:

  • Work with a broker from the outset, as they can advise on appropriate social or educational issues that can be addressed co-operatively.
  • One of the companies should act as a central point of contact, to ensure good communication and the sharing of ideas and views.
  • Hold regular review meetings to track progress, address difficulties and challenges, and communicate with executive management and community partners.
  • A small group of companies (three or four) is enough to start a programme, provided that the agreed action plan includes attracting other companies as the project progresses.
  • Senior business leadership is essential to champion the programme and understand that working with other companies, even competitors, can enhance competitive advantage.
  • The collaborative action model is new to many organisations, so do not underestimate the difficulties managers may face or the time needed to make progress
  • Always celebrate successes, particularly when they illustrate the positive impact of collaboration.
European cities where ENGAGE companies and others are working together to bring employee community engagement to meet local needs are:

Amsterdam
Frankfurt
Madrid
Prague
Paris
Bratislava
Budapest
Milan
